Sustainability
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Goodwill Industries of New Mexico is one of the state’s largest recyclers. Goodwill organizations across the country have been recycling, repairing, and reselling donated items since the early 1900s.
Our approach is much more modern these days, but the objective remains the same: reduce, reuse, recycle. We work hard to recycle and repurpose everything from electronics to books, textiles to plastic toys, which keeps tens of millions of pounds out of landfills each year.
Our Goodwill Outlet offers donations one last chance to sell at by-the-pound rates. We strive to maximize the value of each donation and give them multiple opportunities to sell.
Our main operation center in Albuquerque processes all unsold donations. Our teams separate items into categories so they can be shipped to recyclers, who transform them into useful materials.
How You Can Help
There are many simple ways to incorporate sustainability into your everyday routine.
- Dispose of waste properly
- Use sustainable products
- Shop sustainably
- Repurpose your old clothes
- Unplug electric devices when not in use
Our favorite ways…
- Donate items to Goodwill vs throwing items away
- Buy gently-used at Goodwill vs new
Donate it
Rather than throwing away unwanted items, consider donating them! By donating your gently used household items to Goodwill, you give them a second chance.
Maybe those red sneakers no longer fit your style, or your child outgrew their bike - enable someone to give them new life and keep them out of the landfill.
Plus, your donation will help provide free programs and services for New Mexicans!
Buy Used vs New
Shopping sustainably means choosing to shop in a manner that helps support our environment. Shopping for gently-used items at Goodwill is a great example of this.
When you choose to thrift, you reuse items that might otherwise be thrown into landfills. Vintage clothing and household goods are often made with better quality materials and were designed to last longer.
Thrifting at Goodwill also does good by generating funds to free programs that help New Mexicans find employment.
Properly Recycle
Not everything should be donated.
So what do you do with the items that aren't reusable?
Goodwill cannot accept some donations, such as physically broken items, those with safety issues, or that have hazardous materials. Read more about our donation guidelines.
E-Cycle
Goodwill Industries of New Mexico has partnered with Albuquerque Computer and Electronics Recycling Company.
Together we are providing a free recycling program where consumers can responsibly recycle any brand of unwanted computers or other computer equipment in any condition. Donors can drop their used electronics at any Goodwill donation center.
